Context of the Chinese learner debate
The links on the left hand menu provide background material for our discussion of the Chinese Learner research literature. This background has been organised into three sections.
First, in the Introduction, we identify a number of recurring themes in the literature. This helps frame the review that follows in terms of key issues.
Second, in Research Controversy, we address the contested nature of research on this theme. We draw attention to a number of methodological problems that can arise. We draw attention to some problems of interpretation as they arise in discussion of results
Third, in Confucian Heritege, we identify the philosophical tradition that is often invoked to characterise the patterns of thinking and reasoning that is associated with East Asian teaching and learning.
